Suwolbong (수월봉), a Cliff Layered with Primordial Time

If I had to pick one place that captured my heart most during my trip to Jeju Island, it would undoubtedly be Suwolbong (수월봉) in Gosan-ri, Hangyeong-myeon (한경면). As you get off the bus and walk across the vast fields of Gosan-ri (고산리), you can see a low-lying peak rising in the distance at the edge of the sea. Standing at about 77 meters tall, I wondered throughout my walk why this modest peak was so special. The salty sea breeze brushes against my cheeks, and I can hear the rough breathing of the cliffs carved by the waves in my ears.

The charm of Suwolbong (수월봉) lay not in the path to the summit, but in the strata spread out beneath it. The cliff, created by layers of volcanic ash accumulated over eons, was like a thick history book written by Mother Nature. The cross-section of the strata seen up close was nothing short of phenomenal. Watching the patterns meticulously crafted by nature over such a long time, my own worries felt truly trivial.

The Serene Scenery Held by Chagwido (차귀도) and the Breeze at Suwoljeong (수월정)

Upon reaching the summit, the hexagonal pavilion 'Suwoljeong (수월정)' greets travelers. It is said that this was once a place where rituals were held to pray for rain. As I sat at Suwoljeong (수월정) to catch my breath, my eyes caught sight of Chagwido (차귀도) floating in the sea right in front of me. Known as the most beautiful island in Jeju, Chagwido (차귀도) truly reveals its worth when viewed from Suwolbong (수월봉). Watching the island floating like a painting on the deep blue sea, my complicated mind becomes calm as if by magic.

What about the spring water emerging from various parts of the cliff? Seeing those streams rising like the water of life from barren land, I could imagine what Suwolbong (수월봉) meant to the people who lived on this land long ago. The fact that it is not an artificial tourist site, but a place where the raw vitality of nature remains alive, seems to be the reason I keep coming back.

Time Where the Sunset Lingers, on the West Side of Jeju

If you visit Suwolbong (수월봉), you must aim for 'sunset.' Thanks to its geographical location at the westernmost tip of Jeju Island, the sunset at Suwolbong (수월봉) is intense and warm, second to none anywhere on Jeju. As the sun begins to set over Suwoljeong (수월정), the sea and the sky are dyed in a crimson hue. Facing that ecstatic scenery, everyone eventually reflects on a moment in their life.

One visiting tip: Suwolbong (수월봉) is a place where the wind is quite strong. I highly recommend bringing a light windbreaker when climbing to the summit or walking along the coastal trail. The nearby Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road (신창풍차해안도로) is close by, so visiting it for a drive makes for a perfect western Jeju travel itinerary. I would recommend arriving around 4 PM on a cool, breezy spring or autumn day to slowly view the strata and enjoy the sunset on your way down. There is a warm landscape there that, while not too flashy, leaves a lasting memory.
