The Warm Taste of Hallim, Jeju: Facing the Temperature of the Sea at Dokgemulhang

On the Ongpo-ri Seashore, Where the Wind Lingers

The sea in Hallim, on the western side of Jeju, had a particularly blue hue. Intoxicated by the emerald waves of Hyeopjae Beach (Hyeopjae Haesuyokjang), I felt as if my heart became transparent as I walked. Just as a pleasant hunger set in, I found 'Dokgemulhang', nestled deep in the village of Ongpo-ri. The sea breeze felt through the car window carried the quiet, cozy charm of the Ongpo-ri village instead of a fishy, salty scent. Opening the door, I was greeted by the savory aroma of seafood. This place serves the rustic yet sincere taste of Jeju rather than grand decorations, making my steps feel much lighter.

A Bowl of Comfort That Captures the Entire Sea

The food here focuses on the natural taste of the ingredients rather than flashy techniques. The freshness, as if just caught from the sea off the coast of Hallim, unfolds on the table; the seafood, which releases sweetness the more you chew, fills your mouth as if it has transported the ocean itself. The taste, where roughly chopped vegetables harmonize with the scent of the sea, felt like a warm meal from the kindest neighbor met during a Jeju trip. Even without adding special seasonings, the ingredients given by the sea serve as excellent flavoring themselves. Under the sunlight gently streaming in through the window, it feels good to put down the busyness of the journey for a while to enjoy the food at a slow pace.

Travel Route, A Time for a Comma

Dokgemulhang is situated quite cleverly. It is located near Hyeopjae Beach (Hyeopjae Haesuyokjang) and Hallim Park (Hallim Gongwon), making it an optimal route to stop by after enjoying water activities or taking a stroll among the lush trees. I visited during the early evening, and the scenery of the sunset painting the Ongpo-ri port red as I finished my meal was magnificent. If you travel a bit further west, there is also Hwasun Geummorae Beach (Hwasun Geummorae Haebyeon), making it perfect for coming to eat warm food after enjoying the cold spring water at the freshwater pool. Through this place, I realized once again that a restaurant at a travel destination is not just a place to fill your stomach, but a resting spot where we can briefly review the paths we have walked and gain energy to head toward our next destination.
