A deep flavor resembling the blue sea of Hamdeok, Jeju: A warm meal at Daraehyang in Jocheon-eup

A warm embrace after a walk in the sea breeze

Following the emerald-colored sound of the waves at Hamdeok Beach (Hamdeok Haesuyokjang) on the east side of Jeju, you feel your heart lighten. After slowly walking along the Seoubong Trail (Seoubong Dulle-gil) and filling my senses with the salty scent of the sea, I headed to 'Daraehyang', located on Joham Coastal Road (Joham Haean-ro), to soothe my hungry stomach. As soon as I opened the door, the savory scent of 'wok hei' (breath of the wok) caught me, making me stop in my tracks. The peaceful scenery of Jocheon visible through the window blended with the warmth inside, making me feel that this place was more than just a restaurant; it was a resting spot in my journey.

The star of Daraehyang is definitely the seafood Jjamppong. The moment it is placed on the table, the piled-up seafood boasts an overwhelming visual. Taking a spoonful of the broth, it is spicy yet the finish is remarkably clean and refreshing. It is not an artificial spiciness, but a deep umami flavor brought out by fresh seafood that spreads throughout the mouth; it felt as if the sea of Hamdeok had been transferred directly into the bowl. The texture of the seafood was incredibly firm and succulent as I peeled off the shells one by one. In addition to the Jjamppong, the Unijjajang with its thick, savory sauce, and the Tangsuyuk made from Jeju's specialty Black Pork (Heukdwaeji) with its unique crispiness, are delicacies that must be tasted here. The meat was non-greasy, mild, and chewy, and I couldn't stop using my chopsticks, forgetting that I was already full.

Coming out after the meal, the afternoon sun in Hamdeok feels even warmer. Daraehyang is close enough to walk from Hamdeok Beach, and it is adjacent to cultural spaces like the Kim Tschang-yeul Art Museum (Kim Taek-hwa Misulgwan), making it a great spot for planning your route. I visited around 2 PM, slightly avoiding the busy lunch peak, so I was able to enjoy my meal quietly in a much more relaxed atmosphere. Sitting by the window and looking outside while dining was a charm of its own. Whether you want to fill up with energy before climbing Seoubong or are longing for a hot bowl of soup after playing in the water, this place will be your best choice. A warm bowl of food encountered during my trip will likely remain the most memorable scene of this Jeju itinerary.
