The blue sky of Jeju seen through the airplane window right after landing always brings a sense of excitement. The first place I headed after picking up my rental car was 'Samdado Hoetjib', located at 572 Seohaean-ro, Jeju-si. Situated on the Yongduam (Yongduam Rock) Coastal Road, which is quickly accessible by car from the airport, there is no better place to start or end a Jeju trip.

As I opened the door to the restaurant, the air mixing with the scent of the sea hit my nose, feeling incredibly fresh. I was guided to a window seat, and through the floor-to-ceiling glass, the endlessly stretching blue sea of Jeju rippled before my eyes. The sight of people walking along the coastal road and the sound of waves swaying in the wind drifted gently into the restaurant.

The Aesthetics of Freshness: The Sea Served Directly on a Plate

The biggest charm of this place is the large aquarium located at the entrance. True to the claim that they use water drawn directly from the clean, pristine sea, the live fish in the aquarium are full of vitality. Perhaps thanks to growing up on clean plankton, even the color of the sashimi is exceptional.

The table filled with the sashimi I ordered was, in itself, a landscape of the Jeju sea. Placing a thick slice of sashimi into my mouth, a chewy texture and a savory umami spread throughout. It was not an artificial taste, but a clean flavor as if it had just been pulled from the ocean. I understood after just one bite why locals continue to visit this place. Unlike the noisy tourist-heavy restaurants, this place has a quiet, bustling atmosphere with people who truly want to enjoy the natural taste of seafood.

Completing a Jeju Day with a Walk Along the Coastal Road

After finishing my meal, I took a short walk along the Yongduam (Yongduam Rock) Coastal Road to help with digestion. The trail stretching right in front of the restaurant is truly fantastic when the sun begins to set. As the sun starts to dip, the sky dyes itself in shades of pink and orange, and watching that scenery makes the weariness of travel melt away like snow.

If you are planning to visit, I recommend arriving during an early dinner time, between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM. It is the perfect route to enjoy sashimi while taking in the view of the blue sea before sunset, and then slowly walking along the coastal road after the meal to admire the sunset. Being close to Jeju International Airport (Jeju Gukje Gonghang), it seems like an excellent choice for both independent travelers trying to maximize their time and families on vacation.

I think the charm of the island of Jeju ultimately lies in moments like these. Listening to the sound of waves, eating fresh food, and walking slowly while gazing at the nameless sea. The meal at Samdado Hoetjib seems like it will make this trip even more memorable.
