It is said that it is called Jeolgol (Temple Valley) because there used to be a temple called ‘Unsuam’ here; indeed, the scenery where clouds and water flow lives up to its name.

As I walked along the path, huge rock walls rose on both sides, and it was hard to believe that this was a trace of a volcanic eruption. The cliffs, densely packed with joints—fissures created when volcanic ash cooled down while exhaling intense heat in the distant past—looked like massive sculptures carved by nature. The sound of the clear valley water flowing beneath my feet sounded like the only music to awaken the silence.

A 5km Journey That Delights the Five Senses

There is no reason to rush the 5km path that leads from the Jeolgol Branch Office (Jeolgol Bunso) to Daemundari. The vertically stretching tuff walls block the sunlight throughout the walk, keeping a cool breeze even in midsummer. The sound of leaves rustling whenever the wind blows and the clear water sound of the valley brushing against the rocks completely erased the noise of the city.

The highlight here is definitely the transparent stream sweeping over the rocky floor. The narrow and deep valley, created by water carving through rock for tens of thousands of years, makes the walker feel humble. As you walk, you suddenly look up to see the narrow sky, and the sunlight shining through the gaps in the rocks creates an illusion as if you have entered another world. It is the perfect course to arrive in light attire, dip your feet in the water, and take a moment to catch your breath.

Choosing the right time is crucial to fully enjoy Jeolgol Valley (Jeolgol Hyeopgok). I recommend the morning hours when the light enters deep between the rock walls, rather than noon when the sun is too high. Since there is plenty of shade due to the nature of the valley, don't forget to bring a light jacket. As this is a National Geopark, it is essential to have a mindset of preserving the nature we see and feel.
