The 'Dunnae Highland Tomato Festival(둔내고랭지토마토축제)', now in its 14th year, was more than just a local event; it was a festival filled with the taste of nature and the warmth of people. From August 14th to 16th, for three days, the Dunnae-myeon Sports Complex was dyed with the fresh scent of tomatoes.

A Lively Scene and the Tomato Pool that Stimulates the Senses

The highlight of the festival was definitely the tomato pool. When you throw yourself into a pool filled with well-ripened red tomatoes, the sticky discomfort of summer disappears, and the fresh scent of tomatoes embraces your entire body. The laughter of children and the cheers of adults mixed together to add to the heat of the festival. This pool, which operated twice a day, was truly the climax of the trip to Dunnae(둔내). The sensation of stepping on and touching the tomatoes was a liveliness I had never felt before. In the evening, the Taegisan(태기산) Trot Festival took place, and the savory melodies echoing along the foothills filled the night air of the highlands with a cozy atmosphere.

Tips to Make Your Hoengseong Trip More Enriching

I am leaving a few notes for those planning to visit. First, the Dunnae Sports Complex has well-organized parking, but it can be somewhat crowded during the festival, so it is better to arrive early. If you plan to use the tomato pool, spare clothes and towels are essential. If you feel that just enjoying the festival is not enough, I recommend exploring the pristine valleys around Dunnae or tasting drinks made with highland tomatoes at nearby cafes. Don't forget to bring a light jacket, as you will feel the characteristic chill of the highlands after sunset. This trip was more than just sightseeing; it was a time to fully feel and return with the healthy vitality that the land of Hoengseong provides.
