Tongyeong is a city where you can feel the breath of artists wherever you walk. After riding the Tongyeong Cable Car (Tongyeong Cable Car) and overlooking the Hallyeohaesang National Park (Hallyeosudo), I headed to Donam Port (Donam-hang), longing for the sea breeze. When I stood before the East Breakwater Lighthouse, standing silently at the end of 269-38, Donam-ro, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, the first thing that caught my eye was its unique silhouette that seemed to pierce the sky. This lighthouse, which first lit up in 1986, felt less like a simple navigational aid and more like a massive sculpture embodying the spirit of the numerous writers Tongyeong has produced. Watching the 12 outer columns and 6 inner columns stretching vertically, I could feel a powerful energy as if it were defying gravity to soar.

A Safe Path Offered by Green Solace

Walking along the breakwater, the salty smell of the sea brushed past my nose, and the refreshing sound of waves hitting the tetrapods lingered in my ears. The sunlight shining through the pillars as I stood close to the lighthouse and looked up was truly warm. This lighthouse blinks a fresh green light every 4 seconds, serving as a guide for ships entering and leaving Donam Port (Donam-hang). I thought that the green light, which cuts through the darkness at night, would feel like a gentle comfort from Tongyeong to anyone who might be lost. The meaning of the lighthouse—illuminating the right path for future generations—gave me an inexplicable sense of courage today.

A Way to Fully Enjoy Donam Port (Donam-hang)

It is no exaggeration to say that the area around the lighthouse is where the highlights of a Tongyeong trip are gathered. With the Tongyeong Kumho Marina Resort (Tongyeong Kumho Marina Resort) located nearby, it is the perfect place to spend a day overlooking the sea, and if you want to fill yourself with artistic inspiration, head over to the Tongyeong International Music Hall (Tongyeong Gukje Eumakdang) right next door. The scenery of the Donam Tourist Complex (Donam Gwangwang Danji) is too beautiful to turn back after seeing only the lighthouse. Personally, I highly recommend the moment at dusk when the sunset dyes the sea red and the green light of the lighthouse just begins to turn on. Stand at the end of the breakwater, face the wind, and listen to the stories told by the sea of Tongyeong. Even if you don't do anything, simply standing there will be enough to make it a fulfilling trip.
