On a weekend when I wanted to escape the noise of the city, my heart stirred as soon as I opened the car window and a fresh scent of grass rushed in. Damteo Valley (Damteo-gyegok), located in Sangno-ri, Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, had an extraordinary name. The origin of the name comes from the stories that in the past, the bones of hunted animals piled up like a wall, but now, only the sound of clear water and lush trees remain in their place.

From the entrance of the valley, the dense trees perfectly blocked the scorching summer sun. The cold air felt as soon as I dipped my feet in was enough to make my body shrink. This place is where the Damteo Stream (Damteocheon), a tributary of the Hantan River (Hantangang), flows, so the water is truly clear. With the sound of water rippling over the rock beds visible through the transparent surface tickling my ears, it was literally like a sanctuary of nature.

As you walk along the valley stretch of about 7km, you can encounter masterpieces crafted by nature. At the southern foot of Yongjeongsan Mountain, the towering 'Meokbawi Rock' felt sturdy, as if it had silently watched the passage of time. Moving a little further past Sinpo-dong, the 'Bulsangam Rock,' a vertical cliff, appeared. Seeing the rock wall spread out like a folding screen and the stream flowing quietly beneath it made my complicated thoughts feel like they were being washed away by the current.

Since the water was so clean, it was worth bringing snorkeling gear. Looking into the water, I could clearly see small fish swimming in schools. The water depth was also suitable for children to play in, and seeing families spending a leisurely time there looked very peaceful.

Travel Tips for an Unforgettable Summer Day

It is a distance of just over 2 hours from Seoul, making it a stress-free trip. As the valley is popular in summer, it is recommended to visit in the early morning to secure a prime spot. Avoiding the noon hour when the sun is hottest, setting up a spot under the shade of trees, and listening to the sounds of the valley while eating a packed lunch is a happiness that cannot be replaced by anything else.

Since the valley is largely kept in its natural state, it is important to have the sense to always keep the place clean where you stayed. It is also good to plan a full-day itinerary by connecting it with other attractions in Cheorwon. However, as it is a destination centered on natural landscapes, amenities are not as perfect as in the city, so I hope you carefully pack necessary snacks, water, and picnic mats in advance. Dip your feet into the valley water and close your eyes in the direction the wind is blowing. You will finally be able to feel a sense of fulfillment as if you have become a part of nature.
