If you take a few steps inward past the apartment forest of Hwamyeong-dong, Busan, a refreshingly cool and clear breeze brushes against your cheeks as if by magic. I stood at the path where Daecheoncheon Stream, which originates from the deep valleys between Pari-bong Peak and Daeryuk-bong Peak of Geumjeongsan Mountain (Geumjeongsan), flows into the Nakdonggang River (Nakdonggang). Stepping here after walking on cold asphalt, the scent of the forest tickles my nose, and I can hear the sound of crisp leaves crunching underfoot. Isn't it a small privilege for Busan citizens to encounter such nature in the middle of the city center?

The trails created along Daecheoncheon Stream change their appearance with every season. In spring, bright green sprouts; in summer, dense lush greenery; and in autumn, foliage that looks as if it's burning with color welcome me. Thanks to the well-maintained bicycle paths and walking trails, it's a place where anyone can walk without burden. You don't have to go on a long trip; just by tightening your shoelaces, you can soak in the energy of Geumjeongsan Mountain whenever you like.

Encountering Aegi-so, the Blue Pool of Legends

If you go a little deeper along the trail, you will meet 'Aegi-so', the highlight of Daecheoncheon Stream. It is a large pool created by a small 4-meter-high waterfall falling into it, and its color is deep and blue like a jewel hidden in the mountains. The sound of water pouring from the waterfall is like magic that makes you forget your complicated daily life. If you stand still and listen to the sound, the refreshing and cool scent of the valley, rather than the smell of stagnant water, wraps around your entire body.

Sitting on the rocks around Aegi-so and staring blankly at the flow of water is the highlight of this trip. Children observe small fish in the shallow water, and adults chat together under the shade of the trees. This place is not a resort with grand attractions, but that is why it is even better. The raw, rustic nature of the place makes the heart feel much more at ease.

Adding Leisure: Hwamyeong Arboretum and the Paths of Geumjeongsan Mountain

The path leading from Daecheoncheon Stream toward the West Gate of Geumjeongsanseong Fortress (Geumjeongsanseong) is quite charming. If your physical strength allows, I recommend also visiting the nearby Hwamyeong Arboretum (Hwamyeong Sumokwon). The arboretum has many beautifully decorated trails, making it perfect for walking with children or enjoying a quiet date with a loved one. Also, if you have time, it is nice to enjoy a slow hike along the Geumjeongsan Dulle-gil (Geumjeongsan Trail).

Personally, I prefer visiting on a weekday afternoon when the sun is starting to set and the shadows of the forest stretch long. Because Daecheoncheon Stream, during times when there are fewer crowds, gives me the feeling that it has become entirely my own space. While it is full of life in the summer with people enjoying the water, it is a place that never loses its own unique atmosphere throughout all four seasons.

Public transportation is convenient when visiting Daecheoncheon Stream. If you get off at Hwamyeong Station (Hwamyeong) on Subway Line 2 and walk up slowly, you can start walking along the course of Daecheoncheon Stream. There are quite a lot of visitors during the day on weekends, so if you want to fully feel the tranquility of the forest, I recommend the early morning. Comfortable walking shoes are a must. If you take a warm cup of coffee from a nearby cafe in Hwamyeong-dong and walk with it in your hand, the cool sound of water you encounter at the end of the path will be a sweeter reward than anything in the world.
